According to old information (as I am no longer an active motorcyclist) from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, 74% of all motorcycle accidents are caused by cars turning left in front of motorcycles.

I have been involved with several motorcycle safety course over the years and the best advice that I have ever heard came from an Arlington County Police motorcycle Cop. Which I know I have posted before: "Just pretend that you are the invisible man riding the invisible motorcycle and you will stay out of trouble"

I've never been a motorcycle guy but if I was I darn sure would get one and I'd have a bike with side roll bars (not sure what the bikers even call them but I know they have saved the legs on a couple of my friends).

My motto when I rode (rarely) on the street was "pretend that everyone is out to kill you".

My motorcycle accident was caused by exactly that a woman pulled away from a stop sign and turned left dead in front of me.

Early on they were called "Safety Bars" until about 1980 when product liability suits caused a name change to "Engine Cover Protectors" to protect the side covers (I.E. Alternator cover) that protrude from the side of the engine.

Let me guess. She said that she did not see you.
