Roger Kahn wrote "The Boys of Summer" which was a chronicle of the Brooklyn Dodgers in the late 40s and early 50s. The team, named after the trolley dodgers, or pedestrians of Brooklyn in the 20s, played at Ebbets Field (now a housing project) and really was the heart and soul of Brooklyn. I remember seeing grownups cry when they announced that they were moving to Los Angeles in 1957. I was just a 7 year old kid so I didn't really understand how very important this team was to my home town. Many, myself included, believe that the decline of Brooklyn began when the Dodgers left.
1. Who were the 5 "Boys of Summer"?
2. Which one of them was passed over by the sportswriters and is the only one not in the Hall of Fame (a travesty if ever there was one, he was truly a great)?

From extensive research (yeah, right) I have come to the conclusion that the 5 Boys of Summer are, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, and Gil Hodges. Gil Hodges is not currently in the Hall of Fame, however, he is on the Veterans ballot this year.

Gil Hodges settled in Brooklyn. He lived about a block from my high school. In the winter he'd come out in the morning and wave to us as we were walking to school. When he died, the lines of people waiting to see him wound around the block, the wait was about 3 hours. People were lined up all through the day and night.
I hope Gil Hodges is elected to the Hall of Fame. If ever a man belonged there he does. He was a great ball player and a giant of a man. A hero who all of us kids in Brooklyn looked up to.
Your turn.
