He had a long life and I agree, his commentary was often very good right up to the end.

I hope that he will RIP.

I am a long time listener of NPR as most of you probably know. I often did not agree with his opinions but I always respected his. In the words of Voltaire: "I may wholly disagree with what you say. But I will defend to my death your right to say it"

This conservative found even his most liberal-slanted commentary to be incisive, perceptive, and thought provoking.

Apparently he was on Nixon's enemies list. What kind of nutcase has an "enemies" list?

The presidential kind. Yes, Schorr was on the infameous enemies list at Number 17.

The list was initially only 20 names long and was outlined in a memo from special assistant George Bell. The list was most likely composed by White House Special Council Chuck Colson. Later Colson developed a much more comprehensive "Master list of politicol opponents." This list included such dangerous radicals as George Wallace, Polaroid co-founder Edwin Land, Tony Randall, and Carol Channing.

Wikipedia has a lot of interesting info the both lists, including the text and scans of the original memo and a scan of a John Dean cover memo.

Wiki It

The idea that leadership of one party would compile a list of key members and supporters from the opposition party is not that surprising. That an administration would use the machinery of the federal government to harass and (Dean's words) "Screw [the administration's] political enemies" is more shocking.

Interesting side note: When the second list was released, Schorr read it live on television, not realizing that he was on the list until he came to his own name.
