speeding and stealing are 2 different things.

If the same data was in a store on a cd, would you take it and walk out?

What I don't get is some people think it is ok to download things like the maps which have a value of approx. $100 or even something like Photoshop (over $500) but they won't take if from a store if it is on a $1 CD.

What am I missing here?

I think it's the difference in consequences.

If you walk out of a store after stealing a $1 CD it's serious business, if you get caught. You might get arrested and get a record that affects your future. You download something, that is readily available, (if you know how), even though it's ethically wrong, and nothing happens. How many people download something and get caught?

I'm apparently beyond frugal: about $20 every 10 years or so for a new road atlas...MapQuest usually meets my needs for travel...

I haven't clicked the shutter on the camera in about 4 years...

The cell phone gets used about 30 minutes/year on average...

^I think you don't have the need, is all.

I didn't buy my first GPS until getting lost twice, on my way from California to Ohio. I decided it was worth it to have some help, right there, in my face. If you have a co-pilot who reads maps, you might not need a GPS.

Photos? I just love seeing my kids as they grow up. My memory isn't good. I like to have photo of my Vintage friends at meets, to share, also. And when I'm using the GPS on roadtrips, I want photos of the awesome places I've been.
