12-20-2018. Here is a taste of my day with my daughter at the Denver Zoo, yesterday. She spent the day showing me around and sharing her knowledge about every animal and background of them on her day off. She is working there as a temp(!), full time, with ZERO benefits and crappy pay. She is SO over due for a legitimate full-time position and we are hoping she fills the next perfect opening. There's nothing like going to the zoo with a zookeeper who works there! She knows her way around and knows all kinds of facts about the zoo itself, the personnel and the animals. She knows which department has all males for zookeepers and the one that's all females. She also has zookeeper friends that let us go behind the scenes to see some awesome big cats, otters and the flamingos. I can only share the flamingo photos because the public can pay to have a flamingo encounter, too, for $50. We saw the entire zoo over 5 hours. I was extremely impressed with the Denver Zoo. Many times we would walk from outside, where it was a relatively warm day for Denver in December, into a building that was warm and humid for the animals, fogging up my glasses. The Topical Discovery area is amazing! It's like walking through a rain forest with live trees, in warmth and humidity. When everything outside is dead looking for winter, going inside to green, lush plants is such a treat! It impressed me more than the Long Beach Aquarium. I thought it was fitting when one of the male zookeepers, in the all male department, told me that the zoo never feeds live food as he told us to watch a turtle that just got it's meal of a fish, and she told me then, about the special treat of live fish for some otters (?) and how they scrambled to catch them. I was super tired but it was so enjoyable! I adore my daughter.

^12-20-2018. The ring tailed lemur is her favorite animal. She first met them volunteering at the Santa Ana Zoo in California, while going to UC Irvine. She transferred to UC Davis and volunteered the Sacramento Zoo, before getting hired there.
^12-20-2018. One of her zookeeper friends works in the department with the flamingos. In the winter, the flamingos aren't outside due to the cold and the public can pay $50 for an encounter with them. We got to do it for free.

I would think there are tons of peeps who want to work at zoos, hence the low pay, etc. Are the all male zookeeper areas the preferred ones?

Her pay is low because she's a temporary hire right now but yes, in general, it is not a high-paying job, probably like you say, because there are lots of people who want to do it. Zookeepers tend to work with the animals they like the best and the one department that's all male is in the rainforest area. She wouldn't want to work with those animals but she implied that the guys wanted to keep women out. The department that's all women is known to be a pain with lots of infighting. She says you can ask a zookeeper's favorite animal and get a big insight into their personality. The social people like the social animals and the introverts like the lone animals. She says the people that love the reptiles are a strange lot.

Well...I do NOT like reptiles!
What are Christa's favorite animals?
And, what about yours, Patty?
