Original Thoughts
Well, the US patent office would disagree with the definition of original thought offered here. A new way to do something, or a combination of existing technology to do something that was not previously done is all fair game for a patent.
Another of my former "original thoughts" capitalized upon by others:
The story of soldiers of the future. They are implanted with data processors that are in turn wired to the soldier's organic brain. The connection is made through an interface than attaches to the soldiers vertabre at the base of the skull. The interface contains both mechanical and biological components that allows the processor to communicate through the soldier's own central nervous system.
The processor allows each soldier to store a huge volume of intelegence and intricate battle plan details. The soldiers can communicate with each other through the processor without speaking. The processor can be programmed with more than information. For example, detailed files of the martial arts can be programmed into the processor and the soldier can instantly access those files to become a lethal hand to hand combat expert without ever having a lesson. In my story, one soldier learns of a plan to use the wired soldiers for an illegal operation. You can guess the rest. 6 years after this idea the movie Johnny Neumonic came out. The Matrix came out after that.

^^^^ Wow Bill that is a pretty cool story line.
My two creations where not as lofty. Back in the "Urban Cowboy" days when big belt buckles where in style I came up with the idea of a "Mistletoe belt buckle" and did not act on it. A year later they where on the market. I also came up with a double sided dart board. The first side had a conventional dart board. The flip side replaced the numbers with alternated male and female articles of clothing, for a game of "strip darts". I did nothing and two years later they were being sold by Spencer Gifts.
