Patch from Dad's uniform
Yeah, but look at what appears to be the duck's eyeball
And the wing cap looks like a duck beak!
i.e., the top circle of the 8 bears a resemblance to a duck 's head caricature. And lots of the insignia of the time were caricatures - lots even done by Disney.
Taking that away, it does look more like the standard 8th AAF Patch.

Here is a very extensive website, Lainey.
Eighth Air Force
There are even photos on the site. Wouldn't that be neat if you found something about your Dad on the site?
(Hey, maybe I better get registered under my own name.)

I know this regarding my Dad's Service from his obituary. He wrote it himself and was extremely proud of his service.
He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, holding the rank of master sergeant. He served in the battles of Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.
He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Distinguished Unit Badge with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
Lainey,
Here's a site that might be good for research and sources of info. on your dads unit.

looks like a figure eight to me, but I do see the resemblance to a duck.
