Default Placement of GPS/Instruments

There is someone on this website working on a plastic piece to replace the original above the windshield that holds the dome light and sun visors. The idea is to place GPS, radar dector, misc. instruments there.
Someone else has discussed doing the same thing with the plastic piece inside the A pillor on the driver's side
Both sound good in some ways, however - this weekend I experimented with placing my new GPS enabled Palm Treo cell phone on its suction cup stalk in both locations (next to the rear view mirror and next to the A pillor about even with the top of the steering wheel.
I tried the high position first and discovered that it doesn't work for us Vintage owners who wear bifocals. Ergo the replacement piece up high would not be advised for us old f**ts.
When placed next to the A pillor about steering wheel high it was very easy to read with my bifocals. I tried a lower position close to the dashboard, and it was, like the high position, not easily readable.
Something to keep in mind if you are considering either of these mods.

I've also been trying to figure out a solution to this without cutting the dash. I like the notion of Rick's replacement for the driver's sun visor in principle, but it will require specific GPS gadgets to be used (if he did this for the passenger side to mount a V1, though, I'd snap it up!).

What I'd like to do is put a larger screen almost vertical in the middle of the dash, just above the two "convertible" air vents (to the right of the driver's vent). Mounting it on a little shelf of some kind, which wedges in to the crack below the dash and above those vents, seems like the best bet.

I'm not quite at the point where visibility (i.e., need for special lenses) will be an issue, which helps. But it's still a puzzle. HPH

I use the stick-down mount that came with my Garmin StreetPilot 2610, in my S2000. If I take it in another vehicle I use the sandbag mount that also came with it. I like the stick-down mount and it is removable goo if I want to take it out.

My Garmin street pilot has a suction mount that works great on the lower section of the windshield just to the right of the driver. It has a large screen that I can see very well.

Thomas (thehoth) over in New England has a great built in GPS system. The screen is stored above the radio and pops out electrically. PM him. I'm sure he would send you pics and info.

Thomas' is acutally an alpine screen that is mounted on a bracket that they glued behind the radio door - it's installed / removed by undoing the mounting screw and the cable hangs out

it's a very nice set up although it's big bucks

I tried to post a couple pictures of how I mounted my Garmin 2610 and Passport 8500 but get a database error. Guess the board is having problems.

Anyway the 2610 is mounted using the Garmin glue-on mount above the right hand driver vent (USA cars) and the radar detector is stuck to the bottom of the windshield with the suction cup mount.

I went to Radio Shack and bought a 1 into 2 12VDC adapter so I can connect the R.D. and the GPS at the same time. I looped the Garmin power cord around the R.D. cord to keep it out of the way.
