There's also a block of 3 electrical contact points forward of the hood release. One is always hot, one's hot with the ignition, and one's hot with something else (maybe the lights?); plus, there's a solid ground nearby. My V1 is wired there with the cable running along the windshield trim along the dash (the unit is positioned sort of like Ed's).

In the electronics forum, there's lots of information about this topic, including pictures of the contact points.

This hard-wiring works fine for gadgets that come with the right sort of cables. However, gadgets with 12-V plugs need to be handled with care, because some of them are really 5-V gadgets with a converter in the 12-V plug. So if you cut the plug off and hardwire that cable, you can fry your gadget.

Gotta watch out for those fried gadgets -- they could burn up the whole car. HPH
That's absolutely right. The XM Roady is 6 volts for example. Thats why I wired in sockets and plug the equipment into it rather than wire directly into the device.

I like my fried gadgets rare.

About my not wearing glasses any more. My far vision has been improving for about the last 5 years. They finally got to a point where I was able to retake the drivers license eye test without glasses and passed!! No surgery required. Guess some things improve with age.

O.K., as you like it, but I've generally found that they work much better before they're cooked.
