Those splitters come in handy. I've got one that I use when I travel.

Note that my 2610 is easy to monitor without taking my eyes off the road. I wouldn't want to mount it in the center console because it would distract me too much when I needed to look at it.

I tried using the GPS-V mounted next to the A pillar in the S but it was too far away to see the small screen.

Ed,

I have a Garmin 2620 and a Valentine V1. I keep them in exactly the same place except that I use the beanbag with a sticky pad instead of mounting anything permanently to the dash.

I couldn't stand the wires so I wired in an auxiliary socket. The socket is in the basket next to the radio on the passenger side. The Garmin and V1 wires still come over the dash, but don't get pulled all the way to the glove compartment.

Go from socket 7, 8 or 9 in the fuse box in front of the drivers foot (and the ground on the firewall) to behind the radio and into the basket with the wire. Attach a double socket to it and you're done. I don't remember which one of them goes on with the ignition but I can look it up if you're interested or you can post a question in the electronics forum.

@ ralper --- Thanks for the tip. I've read other threads about getting power from there but I haven't gotten around to doing anything yet. I've got a voltmeter so if I ever do that I'll be able to figure out what is what.

Ed Grant, I have mine similar to yours but my GPS is farther away, and closer to the radar detector. When I drive I have on distance only glasses so I don't want my GPS too close for me to read.

The 2610 is a touch screen so having it within easy reach is a plus. I was able to stop using glasses a couple of years ago after having to wear them since 1972 for my far vision.

I have the 2610 too. It would be nice not to wear glasses but I'm a scared of the knife, or laser.

There's also a block of 3 electrical contact points forward of the hood release. One is always hot, one's hot with the ignition, and one's hot with something else (maybe the lights?); plus, there's a solid ground nearby. My V1 is wired there with the cable running along the windshield trim along the dash (the unit is positioned sort of like Ed's).

In the electronics forum, there's lots of information about this topic, including pictures of the contact points.

This hard-wiring works fine for gadgets that come with the right sort of cables. However, gadgets with 12-V plugs need to be handled with care, because some of them are really 5-V gadgets with a converter in the 12-V plug. So if you cut the plug off and hardwire that cable, you can fry your gadget.

Gotta watch out for those fried gadgets -- they could burn up the whole car. HPH
