Question for the audiophiles
I recently bought a Bose replacement for my panasonic ipod dock which bit the dust. I placed it on a bookcase shelf in the open second story gallery over the main section of the house so I could hear it throughout the house and I can control it from downstairs. I also subscribed to music match and am amazed at how much better the quality of the sound I'm now getting. WOW. Is it the music match that's making the difference or the Bose? I'm by no means an audiophile and just like what I like, but this is unbelievable. I can sit for hours listening to subtle changes I never heard before. If its the music match that's making the difference, then its really worth the $25 a year!
There are probably better speakers in the Bose unit than you had in the Panasonic. I doubt the source material is any better in quality. Digital is digital; it either works or it don't.
I'm glad it's working out for you. I'm not a fan of Bose. As the saying goes in audiophile (audio snob) circles - "No highs, no lows, it must be Bose".

I am by no means sophisticated when it comes to the quality of sound, but even though the Bose speakers were cheaper than the ones I had, the music sounds wayyyy better. Please let me know if you will be in the area and I will quickly turn off any music.
(Dean) Although I was enthralled with the original 901.The placement of the device will also effect its sound. If a speaker is placed close to a side wall or put into an enclosed area, back inside of a cabinet, you can develop a fuller deeper sound.
I should have been clearer in my question (that old hindsight thing). My panasonic included a cd player and I played a LOT of my cds on it. It was placed in the same place as the Bose so I could play the music and hear it as I moved about the house. I loaded a zillion classical cds onto my ipod and use the dock on the panasonic for playing those cds. AFTER I replaced the panasonic I decided I needed a faster loading mechanism for the cds and started using another computer that loads faster. I cannot synch the ipod to two computers so I started using a sharing program and purchased itunes "in the cloud" which as I understand it, matches all my uploaded cds to itunes' version which is supposedly better. I can now load cds using the faster computer and synch the ipod to my laptop which is far slower, but synchs quickly and I lose nothing since I can update my music library in the cloud. I hope this makes sense. Not only am I not an audiophile, but I know nothing about digitizing music files either. However, I am quite fortunate to have you guys who are far more intelligent about these things.

During a mis-spent youth I got into audio equipment.
I also grew up in the shadow of Bose and in fact worked there as a kid in the stock rooms. Doing inventory of the fiberglass bin was always my favorite. NOT!!!!
I was never particularly impressed with their products.
They do, on the other hand, have a spectacular marketing machine.

After finally trying to understand what the itunes match thingy does, I've discovered that the cds I've loaded into itunes are matched to their database and if they have a higher quality file, it is put in my library on the cloud. I guess that explains why some of the recordings I play from the ipod are so much better than the ones I had on cd. I'm particularly fond of Beethoven's 7th, 2nd movement and it is far better on the ipod than the cd. Bear in mind, my old stereo is a sony with big floor speakers that is probably at least 25-30 years old.
