it's almost always better to go early than later.
the last group gets all the work of every before them and as you said, the last ones in the boat usually get nothing.

congrats on finding a " new boat".

Glad to hear you've found a job. The economy is tough right now.

My +1 just changed jobs as he saw "handwriting on the wall" where he was. If his previous place of employment closes, I'm SURE there would have been no severance package. He didn't want to hang around to find out. . . .
Congrats on the new job. I wish you well in it.

Lainey, we've been away from home for a while and upon our return (we were gone just under a month) we discovered that two very large and quite nice auto dealerships had closed down. Their big nice buildings are just sitting vacant. I suppose its a sign of the times.

This will sound cold but sometimes a downturn can create opportunity for new businesses.
Looking for the silver lining.
during a downturn several important business pieces become available.
real estate i.e floor space is now available at a much cheaper rate.
labor is also much more affordable and plentiful.

on the other side though capital has dried up, thanks to the sub-prime collapse. and cheap money is the life blood of any start-up.

^^ You're correct, Bolton. It is a bit surprising to see so much downturn here. Our city is usually a good ways behind the rest of the country in such things, but seeing so much unemployment, unsold real estate, businesses shutting down, etc. gives one pause.

Good luck with the new job, though if you've been working as a consultant for them, maybe it's not "too new"?
As I found out when they made the offer for fulltime that they considered the consultant work a "test drive". I feel the same way as it give me an opportunity for some great insight into the company. Most of the people that I worked with will now be reporting to me. I will be interesting to see if the honest communication changes when you go from Consultant to "boss". I hope not.

Possible, but you can defuse that with some talks to them about fairness and working together. If you are sincere and even handed, should be fine.

Good luck on the new opportunity

A few months after my post above ^^ , I also got the axe.....they moved before I did it! I'm enjoying my leisure but have been talking to one headhunter....but not sure that this fulltime job (salary with a 50% raise) is very interesting to me I'll start to look around after the summer....
