Default Running The Pothole Slalom

If you live in a four-season area, you're no doubt discovering an extensive crop of new potholes in your local streets. If you drive a car like the S, you're doubly aware of each imperfection.

So, instead of complaining, I take it as a challenge. Whenever possible and safe, I like to "slalom" my way around potholes, taking advantage of this car's incredible nimbleness and flickability.

Now, I'm not talking about weaving all over the road like a fool -- I just mean that when it's feasible, it's fun to make little corrections, dancing my way around those ever-present suspension-eating pits that SUV drivers never seem to notice.

Anybody else like to run the pothole slalom? Believe me, here in the DC area, I'm never short of opportunities!

We don't have the problem here in So Cal but when I went to Baltimore in October 1983, I was amazed at them. I had no idea roads could get so nasty.

Sure, I'm running it fairly often, driving mostly around Arlington and McLean. Lee Hwy in particular, with potholes and construction, is fun...

I used to love doing it in my Jeep Wrangler. Sure, it doesn't handle as well as the S, but the oversized tires and the pressed steel rims were indestructable.

I'm afraid to do it in my S. Some of the pot holes here in the Metro NY are so big that if my S fell into them it would never be seen again. I'm sure I could do some major damage if I misjudged and fell into one. I'm convinced that the snow plows have extra aggressive blades to provide the road crews with extra work in the spring.

Our roads are pretty bad now too. In addition to pot holes we have quite a few frost heaves. Hit a frost heave get airborn and then land in the salt and get sideways, not fun. That's why I hold on to my old Toyota.

The county roads in this area are constantly being torn up by mining and logging trucks and equipment. Back in the 50
