Now that is true love.

That is why we "drive them, till they drop". Their are many vehicles that I would like to own, but I cannot justify the PP tax.
Wow, that seems like a lot!

Less than Michigan! Michigan's calculation is based on the purchase price and is not adjusted as the value drops off. KBB puts my eleven year old Audi at $9k which would be $411 in Matt's state. I pay $505, which if I did the math right equals $5.61 using VA. We pay less to begin with but it never drops. I guess the idea in this state is to discourage long term whereas VA is just the opposite.

^^^In Michigan .... is it based on what a vehicle was new, or for pre-owned the used car price? In theory could you sell your car to your wife for say $2000 then pay tax on that?

in Mass, auto excise is based at $25 per thousand of appraised value.
the appraised value falls of fairly quickly on the front end
In the year of manufacture 90%
In the second year 60%
In the third year 40%
In the fourth year 25%
In the fifth and succeeding years 10%
it's that 10% tail that is the killer if you have higher end cars.
My wife's old S-class which is 14 years old with 238K on the clock....
yeah it's still worth $8200 according to the state. ( so $205 per year)
any offers at that valuation will be gleefully accepted. ( under the right circumstances the $205 might be accepted)
My GL550 and E550 fall in the same bucket.

I just wrote the check for the vehicle (excise) tax. I forgot what it was, but as long as it (the tax) goes down, I'm OK with paying a bit of tax for the fun of the vehicles.

Other states charge more for personal property tax, vehicle tax, but have no state income tax, so in some cases it balances out. MA car insurance is less than it used to be but never a pleasant bill. You want to play, you must pay.

WOW! In Ohio we pay sales tax when you buy the car and only pay for license renewal each year. That's it. No auto excise tax.
