I don't know Gene, aside from some "good old days" nostalgia is there any real good reason to save drive in movies? I think real theaters are much more comfortable and the movie both plays and sounds better. I do think that outdoor movies, like movies shown in the parks where you sit on beach chairs or beach blankets on the grass are a lot of fun too. But I never really found drive-ins to be worthwhile. After driving to the theater I prefer to get out of my car.

We used to have a few in Northern New Jersey, a few in upstate New York (immediately north of New York City), and I think there were a few on Long Island. They're all gone now.

Interestingly there was a drive-in on Route 10 not too far from where I live. It hasn't been there for years and years, but there is nothing on the land where it was. The same is true where we used to have our house in Woodstock, NY. Right outside of Woodstock on NY 28 there was a drive-in. It too is gone but the land where it stood is now empty.

Here is a link to the last drive-in in New Jersey.

I have to agree with Rob. We don't like to eat/drink in our cars and what good is a movie without popcorn and a drink?

I remember my first time ever to try vodka was at a drive in movie on a HS 'double date'. Some fun memories, I hadn't thought about drive ins for a long time.

No, I don't think I would go now if we saved them. But thanks for the memories, Honda!

My HS memories of going to the Passion Pit certainly aren't the movies. Got'a love those big old Detroit tanks. The funnier ones in college involved going even bigger - in a hearse! What happens at the Drive-In, stays at the Drive-In. Today's cars are just too small.

Mine was a 1964 Rambler Station wagon with front seats that reclined flat and a rear seat that also folded flat. Ah the memories......

Gee, that's sad, Rob. Ohio boasts about 28 open drive-in theaters. There are supposed to be another 20 in Indiana and another 28 in Pennsylvania.

Here's a link to find a drive-in near you.

Drive-In Search

Fortunately, the drive-in near my house (Starlite in Amelia, OH) has alrady gone to digital projection. I suspect we will soon lose a LOT of drive-ins due to the death of 35mm film.

By the way, our group here in Cincy needs to get off our dead asses and get to the drive-in like we've been talking about. I haven't been for years.

Bah! That's why God invented vacuum cleaners and why diet soda leaves no residue other than a little powder.

You know a year or two ago, Mary got a little piece of chocolate stuck right at the edge of the crevice at the outside of the shifter boot (chocolatey granola bar). I got mad but I got over it. Life's too short and of course I enjoyed harassing her about it until she told me to put a sock in it.

Yes, life is too short to be cleaning food crumbs up out of a car.

Whew! the last time my wife and I went a drive-in we were anxious to leave -- and we did. it wasn't the same crowd that we once knew as youngsters.

There are a total of 17 drive in theaters here in Texas. Amazing that one opened with in the last year in Ft. Worth and is doing very well.
