Default Scam e-mails

This evening I was the lucky winner of a million euros in an European contest sponsored by Bill Gates, and I was informed that there was a great deal of activity on my Chase account.

To claim my millions all I had to do was reply with my name, address and other information.

To protect my Chase account (I didn't know I had a Chase account until I got this e-mail) all I had to do was verify by returning the e-mail with some information. I was further informed that for the investigation to proceed I had to stay out of the account and not tell anyone about the e-mail for 48 hours after I replied.

What a lucky day!

I was wondering if any of you are getting these same types of e-mails and what kind of scams have you heard of.

There is apparently a new phone scam. You receive a very official-sounding call from 'Visa Fraud Unit' alerting you to a $497 charge to your account...just under the threshhold for normal alert. After some very official sounding commentary about restoring the charge to your account etc and getting you to get out your card, the phone perp asks for the 3-digit ID on the back of your card. If you have been lulled into a false sense of security, you provide it.....and......game over Within a couple minutes, there IS a $497 charge to your account.

I've been getting a few variants of the Chase scams and tons of Ebay scams as well. If the bogus e-mail includes a hyperlink, I run the cursor over it to see what the address is just for laughs.

I get a few weird e-mails from unusual addresses on one of my e-mail accounts, but I never open them and just delete them from the mailbox. I use Thunderbird for a lot of my official mail and NEVER get spam. Unfortunately the thunderbird account also weeds out some mail from friends who have cutesy little names or hotmail accounts, so I use an aol account for those folks.

My spam filters are working pretty well. I have it set pretty high, so I check it when I get notified to move something if it's legit. So far, nothing has been.

E-Bay, PayPal, the major bank credit cards...the list goes on and on: all these are used as vehicles for the phishers to try to scam you out of enough information that they can steal from you somehow. And I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but I think that Hotmail.com and the other mail hosts that allow anonymous users are complicit in these scams.

And then there are the Nigerian-type scams, the fake lotteries, and so on. At least those can be good for a laugh. And then there are the hot stock tips, the cheap prescriptions, and p0rn, p0rn, p0rn. Sheesh.

Every now and then I'll open one of these to see the latest tricks -- generally I do this on my ISP's web interface so that I'm not downloading anything beyond the display. Newer browsers have little prompts that will tell you if a URL is different from its visible link, which helps with the phishers.

When in doubt, go to the purported sender's site directly; never, ever use those conveniently supplied links. I used to think my PayPal account was in jeopardy until I went there and looked -- it's always fine.

One thing I have to say: those folks are pretty creative about stealing and mimicking real web sites. I guess they don't have anything better to do with their time. HPH

This is something new. I don't know how it works but it has scam written all over it.

TODAY SHOW

PLEEEEEEASE REEEEEAD! IT WAS ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA TODAY SHOW
...

To all of my friends, I do not usually forward messages but this is
from my friend Pearlas Sandborn and she really is an attorney.
If she says that this will work - It will work. After all, What
have you got to lose?

SORRY EVERYBODY.. JUST HAD TO TAKE THE CHANCE!!! I'm an attorney and

know the law. This thing is for real. Rest assured AOLand
Intel will follow through with their promises for fear of facing a
multimillion-dollar class action suit similar to the one filed by
PepsiCo against General! Electric not too long ago.

Dear! Friends; Please do not take this for a junk letter. Bill
Gates is sharing his fortune. If you ignore this, You will repent
later.

Microsoft and AOL are now the largest Internet companies and in an
effort to make sure that Internet Explorer remains the most widely
used program, Microsoft and AOL are running an e-mail beta test.
When you forward this e-mail to friends, Microsoft can and will
track it (If you are a Microsoft Windows user) For a two weeks time
period.
For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will
pay you $245.00. For every person that you sent it to that
forwards it on, Microsoft will pay you $243.00 and fo r every third
person that receives it, you will be paid $241.00. Within two
weeks, Microsoft will contact you for y! our address and then send
you a check.

Charles S Bailey General Manager Field Operations

I thought this was a scam myself, but two weeks after receiving
this e-mail and forwarding it on. Microsoft contacted me for my
address and within days, received a check for $24,800.00. You need
to respond before the beta testing is over. If anyone can affoard
this, Bill Gates is the man.
It's all marketing expense to him. Please forward this to as many
people as possible. You are bound to get ! at least $10,000.00.
We're not going to help them out with their e-mail beta test
without getting a little something for our time. My brother's
girlfriend got in on this a few months ago. When i went to visit
him for the Baylor/UT game, she showed me? her check. It was for
the sum of $4,324.44 and was stamped Paid in Full Like I said
before, I know the law, and this is for real.

Sincerely,
