Default Skype

I downloaded this just to see if it works. Its using you computer as a telephone.

All you need is a headset with a microphone and a broadband conection. Cost is

1.5 cents per minute almost anywhere in the world. I set up a 10 dollar account to

get started. Im 140 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico and i talked to my wife like she

was next door. The reception is amazing, you can have your own phone number

for a one time charge of 30 dollars and voice mail, you can recive calls and your

voice mail. One of the engineers i work with told me about this, he was talking to

people on the West coast, i couldnt belive it. I thought i would pass this on.

Edit......Oh and go here www.skype.com

I heard about it when it came out, although my long distance costs are like $10 a year, so I didn't look into it.

I use it now to call China and Taiwan, although I usually just use a land line as well. There is a mobile Skype also, for people with wifi on their cell phones.

My friend in Shanghai also said another company to look at is minowireless.com . Mino uses your wireless internet on your cell phone for calls, and is similarly priced.

It's free between Skype users or at least it used to be. I haven't used it since installing the new phone swith at work which gives me my office phone on the laptop.

One of the most popular high-tech podcasts "This Week In Tech" otherwise known as TWIT uses skype for four way conversations on many of its programs. Seems to work nicely.

Guys,

I just downloaded MINO (minowireless.com) onto my phone and called Taiwan. 2.2 cents a minute plus GPRS charges of .01 per kilobyte of data from Cingular. Either way, it's TONS cheaper than traditional cellular.

The phone call to Taiwan had a slight delay, but was clear. And CHEAP! A qualified recommendation for anyone who calls or travels Internationally--we'll see how it holds up over time.

I wonder if we could use that out here in the GOM. This far out if you can get a signal, its with a private tower and you get charged 2 to 3 dollars a minute, plus
a tower charge. I gotta look into this. Thanks Cordy.
