^Aww man, that sucks, Drew. I knew he was on shakey ground with sponsorship and had been having a rough season, but I didn't know he was having trouble qualifying this weekend.
Speaking of Pomona, when I lived in Azusa in the '60s we could hear the dragsters when they made their runs at Pomona. We used to go to Pomona every summer, but when Irwindale opened that was my weekend hangout. I remember sneaking in to Irwindale late one Februrary weekday evening with a buddy, as we saw the lights on while driving by and we were nosy.
There were several cars being tested, and one new funny car that was debuted the following weekend at the 1969 Winternationals: Nelson Carter's Superchief!!!
We initially got chased by the track personnel, but they let us stay in the pits near the 'chief as long as we didn't get in the way. What great stuff!!! We got to watch them make several half- and full-track passes, and to a couple of high-school seniors, this was pure heaven.
I'm typing this watching the World Finals qualifying on ESPN2, and they just shows Jerry Tolliver's attempt...
They have an incredible super-slow-motion camera that shows the wrinkles forming on the slicks as the car launches, and the vibration of the blower belt as it turns the blower. Neat!!!
This is what I spent my weekend doing. Being Grandma. About twice a year my son and daughter in law take off for an overnight, and I'm happy to keep the little one while they are gone. I usually have her all day on Saturdays while they work, so it was just a longer visit.
By the time we "close up shop" Rick and I both need naps! I'm off from work tomorrow, so I'll have time to get some things done that you just can't do when you are coloring, watching videos, going to pet stores, etc.
Had a great weekend. Friday drove down to see the daughter and son-in-law. They have been married for about 6 months and it is good to see them settling in. On Saturday we went to College Station (about an hour and a half north of Houston) to see A&M play Texas Tech (Tech had won the last 3 meetings). Nasty cold day (at least by Texas standards). The four of us along with 82,788 of our closest friends cheered on the Aggies to an OT win. Great game. Left for home on Sunday for an uneventful and boring ride up I45.
Had some great meals in Houston and the highlight was eating Peperoni rolls at DoubleDaves in College Station.
Lainey -- WHAT A LITTLE DOLL!!!!! {{{hugs from Valentine}}}
Went to a Mid-Atlantic Meet in Charlottesville yesterday -- WOW -- what a WONDERFUL S2K Day!!! Great seeing s2kskibum and several other Vintagers there -- the weather was BEAUTIFUL, the drive was WONDERFUL!!! and the comraderie was FANTASTIC. You know, the S car is great, but the S car community is the icing on the cake -- WE ROCK!!!!! MsP -- it was not the same without you!! I was the only girl driver, but SweetJ was there and several other +1s and it was wonderful. It was a great little "moderate" drive.
I finally got around to boxing in the outside area above the bow window we installed in the living room this summer. It took a fair amount of figuring out, but it's done and most important it's weathertight.
Between that and dealing with the last of the leaves in the yard, and doing some more studying, it was a pretty satisfying weekend.
Well, the weekend is now 1/2 over. Today was Christmas day, and for the first time in about 15 years, Liz's sister and brother in law didn't come to spend Christmas with us. As we're getting older, the drive from Virginia Beach is becoming longer and longer. The four of us (Liz and I and our two sons) spent the day together by ourselves.
Earlier I took the S out for a top down in the beautiful, but cold (24*F) weather. It was a great drive. Then the four of us went to the movies. It was the first time we've gone together in a number of years.
Not too much planned for tomorrow except for the typical Sunday kind of things. Some errands and maybe a drive.
Its been a nice Christmas weekend even though it's been quiet.
