I remember mud season when my sister lived in VT. We didn't visit during mud season. Following mud season came black fly season, if I recall. Along the way there was about two weeks of summer, and then the leaves changed.

Where in Vt did your sister live?
Black fly season is the worst of all of it. We also have what we call stick season in late fall.

Rob, I'd have to double check, it's been a long time, but I think it was Danville, right near St. Johnsbury. Damn it was cold there in January. We went one year for a visit in January. Never again!
