Default Tire Recommendations

I just realized that due to the lack of use the last few years, while I have tread left, my tires are old and should be replaced. My car is an MY2000 that came with S-02's and the last time I replaced them I put another set of S-02s on. Does Bridges tone still make the S2000 S-02s?

I don't drive the car in the winter nor do I take it out in the rain (unless I am traveling). Any recommendations for replacements?

Hi Jim. How's things? I'm in the same boat, I think. The last time I needed tires, I went with the Bridgestone RE01Rs. I love them, but they stopped making them. I think they were replaced with the RE-11.

There is a good review of performance tires in the August 2012 "Car and Driver" under the rubric 'Tire Test', page 80-87.
In short, the tires in the comparo came out

4. Hancook Ventus R-S3
3. Yokohama Advan Neova Ados
2. Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position
1. Michelin Pilot Super sport

FWIWWhen I have to get new rubber I am probably going with the Hankook Ventus R-S3s for street tires. The major difference between the Hankooks and the Michelins is the significantly better wet performance of the Michelins - and the Michelins have a better tread wear rating. Otherwise they test similarly.

Rick went with the Continentals last year. He liked the rating in the rain/wet weather. We always seem to get caught in rain on our trips. He's not unhappy with his choice.

S2000 Tires at Tire Rack

^This is a place to start for ideas on prices. In October 2012 I had Bridgestone® POTENZA RE050s 245/40R17 put on the rear of my S2000. I ordered them online at Costco.com. The installed price for the RE050s before CA sales tax was $495.48. I like them a lot. I have them on the front, too, but they didn't need replacing yet.

I also had Bridgestone® POTENZA RE-11s 255/40R17 put on the rear of my NSX, the same day because I couldn't get the RE050s in the size I needed. I like them, too, but don't like having different tires on front and rear. The RE-11s have more grip than the RE050s so I had to let some air out of the fronts to make the NSX feel right.

I have these on my NSX, and they are great!
I have Kumho ASX's on the S, since it is my DD, and they also give a good balance between wet and dry handling and tread wear. I will consider them for the NSX when it's time to replace the Continentals.

Dunlop Star specs are great upgrade from stock and cheaper. They just came out with a bunch of new tires including the star specs. The new bfgoodrich rival according to autocross guys is the new winning tire

Hankook R-S3 over the Dunlop any and every day of the week!!!

I have gone through many sets of the older R-S2, and now I'm on the R-S3 and f'ing love them
Many people complain they have a soft sidewall, I call total bullchit to this critique
I'm not exactly sure why, but both the R-S2 and the R-S3 prefer slightly higher tire pressures than some people are accustomed to
And, when you get a few extra psi in the tires, soft sidewall is not an issue at all
If there is any downside to them it's the noise, but honestly speaking, this is all relative because I have never met a quiet unidirectional performance tire, ever

I swore off the Bridgestones long ago, way too costly and they don't really offer superior performance

The big tire issue with an AP1 for me is the size selection
On my AP1 I always ran the 245/45-16 on the rear, the 225/50-16 was just too wimpy for me
With the selection of 16" sizes getting so limited I moved over to a set of AP2 V3 17" wheels
Now I run the 215 and 255 combo and with my suspension setup, this car handles even better than it used to

The big beefie 255 looks great on this car
I'm lowered 1" on Eibachs, clearly running Honda wheels
Have never experienced any rubbing, and after 20-some years of track driving with more than half as an instructor, it's safe to say I have a tendency to drive a tad hard on the streets
