Trade '03 S for an '03 911 Carerra?
#11
Before I got the S, I was looking for a 987. As this is just a weekend toy, I didn't want the headache of having IMS or RMS failure with the 987. I didn't realize this problem also apply to the 996. BTW, Porsche totally redesigned their engines for model year 2009 on.
The replacement cost of a 986/7 engine is about $12k if I remember correctly.
If you are going to get it, have it PPI by the dealer. Ask the seller if it is CPO? This will help with any problems that come up. GL

Jerry: As you know, I have both of them. I got what I thought was a steal, which made it possible. Right up front, if it had meant selling the S, I would not have bought the Porsche. Just that simple for me.
That said, I just did a multi-day 500 miles in the Porsche, including the Tomcatt Run at full pace. The car just plain works and works well. There is power everywhere in every gear. I've always had Porsches and went into it without any illusions nor any feelgood ambitions . I have always enjoyed Porsches for their mechanical art. It's a very comfortable, effortless, and spacious ride. It doesn't feel as sporting as the S to me; it doesn't put the same grin on my face; and it doesn't make me misbehave nearly as much. I catch myself going too fast and at the same time gingerly holding back. With the S, I get the fluids up to temp and enjoy. I think you'll miss the S, primarily because they are so different. Try 'em both for a while and then choose which one to sell, if any.

^ thats one sweet looking car!
Definitely more of a cougar magnet if that is important to you.
My wife likes the 911 better because it doesn't mess her hair up as much.
RMS weeping could be a pain but it's not that big a deal. IMS is a completely different matter - those engines go "boom"

also, my "fun" $fund isn't yet back to "fully funded".....although it could manage the transition period.

Jerry, if you really want it, go for it. Jim's best friend has owned Porsches all his life. His only complaint is the cost of repair/service. He will not even drive the S and is quite arrogant about his Porsche. If its what you really want . . . get it. If you're really frugal, the cost of service may be daunting for you.

I don't think you'll have any problem selling your S at a fair price. GPW/tan is one of the rarest and most sought after color combos.
Good luck with whichever choice you make.
