I've heard that you can play dead and they won't bother you.
given my current ground velocity, I believe that would have to be my strategy.

of course then again, I know enough not to go in the woods in the first place.
The park publishes guidelines on how to act if attacked by a bear. There are two types of attacks (I'm working off of memory here so I'm not sure if this is correct): inquisitive and defensive.

A defensive attack is spurred by, for example, accidentally coming up on a mother bear and her cubs. In this particular case, it say to fight back especially gouging the eyes, poking the nose etc.

If it is an inquisitive attack, play dead.

In one of the more morbid aspects of my personality, I buy books on death in the National Parks. I bought one about Yellowstone and of course, it had a chapter devoted to bear attacks. One of the stories I remember from the book is about a photographer who was quite an outdoorsman that was attacked and killed by a bear. In looking at the angle of the camera in the tripod and the height of the tripod, they concluded that he was within 15 feet of the bear when he was attacked.

As for me, I don't want to be within 15 feet or 15 yards - maybe 150 yards would be enough.

According to my sources:

Grizzly - 30 MPH
Quarter horse - 47.5 MPH
Human - 27.89 MPH

And for those of you with arachnophobia:

Spider - 1.17 MPH
In that case - I want to be on my quarter horse in case of bear attack (at least for the first 1/4 mile).

PS. Are you sure about the human speed of 27.89 MPH - that would be almost a 2 minute mile - I think it might be 17.89 mph which would be a little faster than a 4 minute mile.

I'm not too concerned about having to outrun the bear. I'm fairly certain that a bear won't eat anything that smells or tastes of human feces. And if a grizzly bear were ever to chase me, I'm also fairly certain that both would be the case.

Somehow those creepy things always seem like they can out run me

Maybe it's the freezing up with fear?

Fairly certain. That record was actually broken by Asafa Powell - 29.8 MPH - in a 100 m sprint.

Since I never got around to posting many pics from my Roadtrip (yet), I decided to butt into John's thread with a few of my own Yellowstone pics....I passed thru just about a month before John....May 21-22. As some of the pics will show, the weather was a little dicey

I arrived from western Montana and checked into a motel in West Yellowstone...then drove into the park from the west....a sunny day.

About 30 miles into the park....encountering a snow/sleet/ slush storm

Even though I'm riding All-Season tires, I retreated back to "camp" for the nite. The next morning, it was a beautiful sunny day and I drove back into the park...heading south towards Old Faithful. Some friends along the way....

Midway, I saw the first "paint pots"....lots of fun!

To be continued with views in the Old Faithful area.....
