Default U. S. Open

One of the most exciting Opens I have ever watched. Hats off to Rocco for the sheer determination and grit he displayed going up against the "best" player on the planet even with a bad knee. Tiger showed some guts himself and I hope he didnt cause any long term problems with his knee. I was rooting for Rocco as Tiger will win more majors but maybe not Rocco. He gave Tiger a run for his money and they both put on quite a show.

Even my wife, who thinks golf is just flat-out dumb, got enthralled by the goings-on on Saturday and Sunday, and she couldn't wait to hear who won the playoff yesterday.

And while Mediate and Woods were both just outstanding, there was also the opposite end of the spectrum. That 9 by Mickelson on 13 on Saturday made him look like, er, me -- someone who hasn't swung a club since high school. And then there were all the 3- and a few 4-putts. Sheesh.

Mostly, the weekly pro tournament on TV doesn't grab me, but that Open sure did. HPH

What may surprise you - it is also the first one (of any golf game on tv) I've ever watched!! I should add that I have never played anything but putt-putt with the kids and have never been on a real course in my life (but I have been to their bars).

I was with a bunch of golfer friends on Friday night. They were wearing their Titilist hats and US Open hats and glued to the tv. I told them I had been listening to Thursday's game which was on my tv in the garage while I was working on MG stuff and that it had become interesting. One of them took the time to explain in more detail what was going on, Tiger's background, how they move the hole each day, and essentially answer all my stupid questions. So by Sat and Sun I kept an eye on the happenings. And then Monday I was able to watch the last 1/2 dozen holes. By all accounts I did pick a good one to watch for the first time.

It's the toughest test in golf. The USGA makes sure they protect par every year even if means "tricking up" public courses like Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black.

I'm told that our network at work reached a new high usage, apparently due to a lot of streaming video...

Same thing - I had 6 client calls complaining of network saturation and slowness!

That's a good description of what they to at the Master's as well. This year, as I recall, it wasn't so bad, but last year it reminded me of a miniature golf course, with greens faster than a pool table and all sorts of weird dips and curves. I kept looking for the little windmills. HPH

It was very exciting...right as Tiger was putting on 18 in the playoff, the cable transmission went. We were in the middle of a vicious t-storm. I was so mad. But it came back on in time for Rocco's putt and most of the 19th hole. Rocco gave Tiger a run for his money!
