^^ Just go to Leesburg. There is a direct toll road right to Dulles from there.

I was going to suggest Middleburg, since it is a lovely old town and not far from Dulles. But the traffic on Route 50 in the weekday morning is a mess (so I hear). You may have the same problem on the Dulles Greenway (the road John is suggesting). There is a hotel right at the airport. Not that exciting, though.

If he wants Victorian architecture, there aren't many better.

One more question- we need to spend the last night close to Dulles Airport. I think we should be on the west side of DC to avoid traffic going into DC on Wed. morning. What's a good town/area to stay? Any favorite hotels?
Thank you.
--- Most hotels/inns around the DC area are more expensive during the week than on the weekend and where ever you stay traffic is going to be "bumper to bumper" - no one in this area seems to work where they live, and no one lives where they work. Although the Leesburg/Middleburg areas are nice, but a little too "west" for me. There is so much to do in this area .... DC, Baltimore, Annapolis, countryside touring, wineries, Georgetown, shopping, etc etc .... My suggestion (and my $.02) is to stay at a chain hotel (Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn, Hilton Garden Inn) with one of those free breakfast deals and then rent a limo or sedan for the day and let the driver do the driving and worry about getting there and parking.

You can take it easy in the morning, leave your hotel around 10-1030, do a winery or 2 for lunch, and then head to DC for the monuments and museums in the afternoon and early evening. Washington at dusk is just great.

Rory is a great guy ...... and Again .. my $0.02 .

Also on the architecture front, if you make Cape May you probably want to go to Wildwood which has been cited for it's Doo Wop architecture.

Couple items not mentioned yet....depending on your timing:

* Annapolis would be a great spot to visit....history, USNA, seafood, sailing and the Chesapeake region. It's only 36,000 pop and easy to get there from Dulles

* Obviously, there is also a wealth of history right around G-burg, unless you've already "done it" before. The new Visitor Center is terrific and there should be some re-enactor stuff going on on the battlefield. At the VC, you can also book a spot on a tour of the Eisenhower farm....Ike and Mamies home after his Presidency....very interesting. Looter already gave you some good restaurant tips....and there IS a B&B right on the edge of the battlefield.

* Gettysburg is one the east end of Adams County, which has 20,000 acres of orchards and is the Apple Capital of Peeay. The small town of Arendtsville (aka A-ville ) is 10 miles N of Gettysburg and hosts a neat Apple Festival for two weekends in early October. Google to find out specifics.

* The ACAA annual "big deal" of Classic Cars takes place about 40 miles east of G-burg on October 7-8-9-10 in HERSHEY, Peeay. This event is HUGE (judged classics, car corral, swap meet, etc), but may interest you more than the +1. OTOH, the town of Hershy and it's history is also interesting. I am going on Fri morning Oct 9...haven't made it there is many years.
