What happened to the debate thread?
Whatever, Bill. Mods were trying to abide by the OP's stated wishes as long as possible. So we apparently gave it too much time? Or too little? Believe me there was no intent to create a hostile crisis here. I know that there are long term members who do not agree with excluding political discussion from main Vintage, so long as it does not get ugly. But that is not what the rules state and/or what the site Admins require You can fire the mods anytime, but the politics exclusion would remain. ^^^ So we can all rock in the free world together and enjoy the dance. C'mon, mayann!
I know the rules are the rules, and I don't blame you for moving the thread, but I do think maybe the rules could be changed a little.
Agreed, what happened to this forum? Is this where angry old people come to kvetch? Sadly I see little civility or tolerance in this forum any more, but it's okay because we can snipe at each other until everyone else leaves.
There is a political forum for a reason, so that we don't snipe at each other in the main forum, isn't that the reason we have a politics forum? But alas we want to speak our minds, no matter the outcome.
Remember what happened the last time things got this crazy here, I do. No one is ever happy, everyone thinks the mods are out to get them, and people just stop coming. Someone explain to me how a thread about traffic caused by the pope's visit turns into an argument?
If you have to preface your thread with "THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL THREAD", you can bet your sweet a$$, someone will see it the other way, and your thread will go down the toilet, and it doesn't seem to matter what "side" of the debate you are on.
kvetch for those who might need translation.

To quote Grace Slick, "It doesn't mean shit to a tree" Who cares?

No one is ever going to change anyone's mind but a little stimulating conversation in a thread never hurts.
Look at S1997. He moderates S2000 forums. It's his thing. It's fun when you find your thing. He's found his thing and likes playing with it. The best thing is there are lots of things and everyone has their thing they like to play with. Everybody plays with their thing. I'm playing with my thing now. Are you?
Thing about it

As I watch and ponder many things, something I've noticed is that it frequently isn't so much someone's opinion that is the biggest point of contention (although certainly it is at times!), but rather it's the manner in which it is presented.
As far as the duties of moderating go, I want to say in no uncertain terms that Jim is one of the most level-headed and even-handed moderators on this *entire* forum. To use the vernacular, he's good at this stuff. And while I'm bound to certain rules of confidentiality, I will say that he has gone way beyond the call of duty to protect and preserve the Vintage forum in ways which I doubt half the people here have any awareness of at all.
