Sigh.
Agreed, what happened to this forum? Is this where angry old people come to kvetch? Sadly I see little civility or tolerance in this forum any more, but it's okay because we can snipe at each other until everyone else leaves.

There is a political forum for a reason, so that we don't snipe at each other in the main forum, isn't that the reason we have a politics forum? But alas we want to speak our minds, no matter the outcome.

Remember what happened the last time things got this crazy here, I do. No one is ever happy, everyone thinks the mods are out to get them, and people just stop coming. Someone explain to me how a thread about traffic caused by the pope's visit turns into an argument?

If you have to preface your thread with "THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL THREAD", you can bet your sweet a$$, someone will see it the other way, and your thread will go down the toilet, and it doesn't seem to matter what "side" of the debate you are on.

kvetch for those who might need translation.

What he said!
I'm really busy at work (yes, seriously) so not much time to check in/comment and don't really care to get into the "it's political/it's not a political thread" conversation or the "buy a membership/don't buy a membership conversation".

Just want to say thanks Jim for dealing with this in the way that you do. Some days I do wonder why you haven't said "take this job and ___________".

WTF. Here’s my 2 cents.

Jim = best mod, bar none. It would not surprise me to see him riding in the Pope-moblile.

People are all different. Some would love to discuss political things but for personal reasons refuse to pay the membership fee. Others want to discuss things of political nature and know full well it’s just a matter of time based on the subject where it’s going to be sent. Still others like to stir the pot but it’s a fine line between kidding and serious. I am not sure how a simple “Sigh” can get things going again on this thread but as a historian, Zippy, you are correct, there are never any winners.

People are all different. Don’t take what others say too serious and don’t take yourself too serious and you’ll be fine. After all, the point of being here is to enjoy one another and share life’s experiences.

Totally agree with Jim being best mod, bar none. Hope he gets his own Pope-Mobile. People are different and that's what makes us all special, teaches us things and hopefully makes us even better people. I have opinions, they are my opinions and I do not expect everyone else to share them. The world would be a really crappy place if we all liked the same things, wore the same clothes, wanted the same things and so on. I guess that's when we'd start passing out the soylent green.

I myself think it is a great venue for discussing political topics. After all, wtf? The debates, the campaigns, the primaries, the elections - are all going to be a major focus of noise and attention for the next year. Aren't vintage folks after all capable of civil discussion of serious matters often with vastly different possible points of view; showing neighborly kindness and the respect that we normally afford each other without question?.....
Thanks for the reminder to look at the Vintage Politics forum, Jim, and I just did find your new topic...scary but fascinating. I'm sorry that some our good critical thinkers like LB are not part of the discussion there.

Thanks, Jerry.
I, myself, think we should leave the decision to participate in the politics discussions to individual members. It's not of strong interest to everyone. Bill has repeatedly commented on the reasons for his decision, and I certainly respect his choices. Still I will say that, yes sure, I miss LB's contributions to those discussions. Chacun à son goût . Through the years, Bill has been one of the most active, most important, most vital members of the Vintage Forum, and has been centrally instrumental in making Vintage what is is. So I think we should cut him a break here and give him his due.

I've stayed away from further comment on this thread because the subjects being discussed are really not relevant to my original question. If anyone cares to discuss the actual topic, feel free to continue. Let's be adult enough to discuss how we handle political threads and avoid the exercise of picking teams in a fight that didn't exist in the first place. I say if we can make jokes about one of the political parties in the main forum then we should be able to do so about the other. But if we can't make jokes about one of them in the main forum, then let's not allow such threads to survive about either party.

Well, since, IMO, jokes had only a small role In the debate thread's being moved to the politics subforum, I don't agree with the premise of your question. A review of the thread will, i think, explain what ultimately triggered the move. As has been indicated here in this thread, the political debates thread should have been posted in the Politics section from the start . So if moderating mistakes were made (and they were) they included an attempt to give the OP's plea to give no reason for the thread to be relocated to politics a chance to work. You are right, Bill, the political debates thread had politics written all over it from the beginning and should have been moved earlier The final straw was the post that immediately preceded the move.

The posting rules state clearly that political humor is political; and that political humor is welcome in the Politics Subforum.

The political debates thread is still there and available if people want to continue laughing at one or both sets of candidates and both parties' debates.

This thread started out as a critique of a moderating decision. It migrated to include a somewhat broader scope.

Bill remains the OP, so it IS his thread to define and take where he wishes. I'll try to stay out of the way if at all possible...

Well I think the democratic debate was way funnier than the republican debate.
