Been thinking of moving to Alabama or Tennessee myself. State and local taxes are lower there than Georgia.
It all depends on which mix of taxes work best for you.

Aren't there still a few states left where your retirement income (gov't) isn't taxed?

Note to self, "make plans to move south."
We would welcome you to the South with open arms. Between Raymo and myself, we could show you North GA or North AL ... and you'd occasionally get to see a snow fall, but rarely ever have to clean it up.

If you'd rather not see snow ever again, the gulf coast is beautiful, but between those pesky hurricaines and the 100% humidity, bad hair days will be something you'll just have to not fret over ... bless your heart

Why thank you Pant, I'll try to remember those things. So, to stay on topic,\ (ah-hem), this weekend, I'll continue to get rid of junk that I don't want to take south with me when I move. That should take me right up to retirement time (which is a long way off). That and raking leaves.

Speaking of raking, what do you guys who have leaves falling at this time of year do? Do you wait for them all to fall or do you rake them as they fall (once a week) so they don't pile up and become a bigger job? What's the logic? This has been a friendly debate in our neighborhood for years.
Raking leaves - the worst. I wait until we have a windy day and let them blow into the neighbors yard. As far as this weekend we are trying to reschedule our ride from last weekend. Last Sunday we had 45mph wind with a high of 40. I get so envious reading about these folks driving top down to work every day.

Does this mean you're back or still in Spain? Does the Prado still have the exhibition of Van Gogh during his darker (depressed) years? I remember being scared by it way back when.

You sure do get around!
Nope, leaving on Friday so I figure on Saturday I'll be drinking coffee on the Plaza de Mayor and trying to get over the jet lag.

Second trip to Paris this year, first trip to Madrid. I'll let you know about the Van Gogh (I think it's still there though).

Check and see if there's still a "cave" under the Platha where mushrooms are the main tapas and make sure you go "taska" hopping. Oh, the memories!

Alexandria comes around and vacuums up the leaves and composts them after you rake them to the curb. The compost is available for free for Alexandria residents. They come about 5 times over the next 3 months. I have 2 LARGE oak trees in my yard and a ton next door so we get lots of leaves.
^^ They do that here as well, but I usually mulch them with my mulching mower if I have any left after I let the wind blow them in my neighbors' yards.

Since our Oak trees will not drop all of their leaves until the new one push them off, I usually chop leaves with the mower twice in the fall and once in the spring. That means running the mower once in November, once in December and then again about March.

I, for one, am glad that Val and Maury aren't my neighbors. Letting leaves blow onto the neighbors' lawns!

Due to a small house lot and a replacement septic system (TMI?) we have no trees in our back yard, though we have nice tall hedges on the perimeter. The same is true for our immediate neighbors, so not too many leaves to contend with. The park across the street has lots of trees and we have two small ones in our front yard. Those leaves that land on our front yard are easily chopped up with the lawn mower. No need to let them blow onto someone else's lawn.
