Whose selling names
Actually, this crap precedes the Internet. Years ago, my wife filled out a warranty card using the cat's name. The junk mail proliferated: pre-approved credit card offers, calls from telemarketers, etc. Some years later the cat died. Subsequently, I received a call for "Charmin"; I replied that she was deceased. There was an awkward silence, followed by "I'm sorry for your loss."
To which I replied, "Oh, lighten up. It's just a cat. You called for my dead cat. How do you feel?"
I have no use whatsoever for telemarketers.

My wife's father died before we were married (29 years ago); her mother, who died in 2007, didn't change their address on various things, so she was getting mail to "Mr. Robert Smith" all along -- and now we get it. So last night we went out to eat and used a $10 gift card that Copper Canyon had sent Mr. Robert Smith at our address.
It all goes to show that there are hidden benefits to all this stuff.

We still get junk mail for my mother. She died in 1995.
I just love to get calls from siding telemarketers. We live near Atlanta so the first thing I ask is what they have in bullet proof siding.

I get a call every year from the Ohio State Troopers Assoc. telling me that my wife contributed last year and would we like to contribute this year. Diane has been gone five years now.
I refuse to give them a penny!!

When we get calls from replacement window companies, I tell them that I am really glad they called and ask them how many windows they have? Then I tell them that I own a window cleaning company and want to come wash their windows, ask them for their address and what time would be the best time to come, I act all excited and don't let them get a word in edge wise and they generally will hang up on me.
Now that I think about it, we haven't gotten any calls recently.
FWIW, Woot is a legitimate company with legit sales. I've bought a few things from them over the years, and know several folks in my company who check every day for deals. email harvesting is a big no-no in my book, however.
