CBD and THC both derived from hemp/marijuana have been long ignored as medical products in this country. That is no true of other countries. Israel is perhaps the worldwide leader in the investigation of the compounds. Much like the opioid system that exists in the human body (see endorphins), there is also a cannabinoid system that exists in the human body.
The US is far behind much of the rest of the Western world in looking at the benefits of these compounds.

CBD became somewhat legal when industrial hemp was made legal a few years back. It is touted to be an effective treatment for many things from sleep aid to pain relief. A great many people are using it through edibles as it is not really a smokable substance. If you do a quick search on CBD or Cannabis plus Research, you will see that a great deal of work is being done on these compounds OUTSIDE of the US, though that is starting to change.

^ What Ken said.

My guess is that marijuana and all derivatives from the plant will continue to be hyped for the next few years as cures for a number of medical problems while actual research continues.

Wow! CBD and THC oil’s effects should be researched by the government and soon! Who knows what they may uncover!

^ What Bill said.

Any time preliminary research shows even a glimmer of promise, the press goes nuts and the hucksters come out of the woodwork. Few areas of human endeavor are as poorly reported as scientific research. Research on THC and CBD will continue, as it should. And I hope some valuable therapeutic applications result. But meanwhile I will stay off the hype train.

Exactly. Right now, we know it's good for getting you high and increasing your appetite.

Lots of opinions on whether it works or not, too bad that the bible thumpers just can't separate the notion of CBD and full blown cannabis.

Yes, there are lots of opinions. But at this point there aren't a lot of hard research results that indicate any therapeutic benefit of CBD beyond its potential for treating two rare forms of juvenile epilepsy. But it's early and more research is sure to come Such research may find that CBD has other clinical uses. However, regardless of research study results, the hype and the marketing by the dietary supplement industry will no doubt continue.
