We now use Sluggo for slugs. Less messy than dealing with dead slugs in a dish of beer. Sluggo

Keeping a lawn takes a huge amount of water. Since a lot of California is actually desert, lawns are the first to go in a drought. (you know it doesn't rain here from late May till October at all). Watering too much will get you a visit from the lawn police.
On a personal note, we have 62 acres, but not one inch of lawn. Around the house it's drought resistant plants and ground covers, watered on a drip system. The other 61 1/2 acres is oak and pine trees, scrub brush and the best poison oak you'll ever see.
