LOL it's FAKE brushed aluminum...
BTW same here, I have scratches on them and the only thing I do is treat them with 303.
I bet the Syntetic wax will make them look better, reflect better, and potect from further scratches. I will try it this weekend.

It's plastic with an aluminum look. I usuaully just wipe that area with Meguiar's Interior QD. There's not really much you can do about the scratches though.
I used Meguiars prewax paint cleaner ( I have the new radio door and console in my '02) and it took out all the scratches and also had the pleasant fringe benefit of polishing those surfaces to a glossy finish.
It's not real aluminum, but rather a fake "print" (kinda like how fake carbon fiber is printed on) ... with a matte clearcoat over it. So anything you use on the outside of the car to get light scratches out of the clearcoat will work.
But... like I said, it will change it from matte to glossy. I kinda like it, because with the top down, you can see a reflection of the sky on the center console
One more thing: You can dissassemble the console somewhat and remove those pieces (they're separate, see pic

You can also take the radio door out of the car too.
I took my consola and radio door apart and then polished those silver pieces with a Porter Cable and the aforementioned Meguiar's
