Default Clay Marring

Alright, for some reason my quick touch up wax went terribly wrong this morning. While spot claying, I must not have used enough lubrication and the clay stuck to my car in a few places...When trying to get the clay off, I- well, scratched. I'll try to get some pics up, but for the most part my car has been garaged all 10 months I've had it and the paint otherwise is excellent. Any suggestions on products and/or pads I should use w/ my PC? I don't want to compound, but I think I'm going to have to do some cutting. Thanks in advance...Chris

Can't help u with the polishing part (having problems myself with that), but next time ur clay gets stuck to the paint you should use carwash soap first and wash that area. If that doesn't work Dawn will get it off.

Depends on how deep those scratches are, but I'd suggest starting gentle and working your way up if need be. A light polishing pad (Green sonus DAS or similar pad, for example) and some Klasse AIO would be a good starting point for clay marring. Poorboys SSR1, Optimum Polish, Menzerna FP2, Sonus SFX3... Something light in cut. If that doesn't work, move up a step to SSR2, Optimum Compound, Menzerna IP, Sonus SFX2... None of these used with a light polishing pad will remove any significant amount of clear, but can really fix up those scratches.

What do you have in your arsenal?

Hey all- sorry, still no pics. Busy evening and early to work today. Thanks for the initial suggestions...In my arsenal is not much at the moment, that being said I need to buy more so suggest away. Currently I have A few Maguires polishing pads (the yellow one), all the SFX pads and all the SFX polishes. I also have all the Zaino stuff, but have found (and heard) their not ideal for repair- just looks. What would be the logical upgrade from Sonus? I get all my knowledge from you all, so please suggest away. Thanks again- Chris

The SFX pads and polishes should be perfectly adequate to take care of your problem. Start with the SFX2 on the SFX2 pad. Work up if need be (SFX1 on SFX2 pad, then the most aggressive: SFX1 on SFX1 pad). I find with berlina it really helps to finish out with SFX3 on the SFX3 pad at 3-4 speed on the PC.

Since this is only on the front passenger side quarter panel (above the headlight, covering the tire) can I just polish this section? I just polished the entire car about 3 weeks ago...Will this have any adverse effect?

Nope, that's fine. Just make sure to reapply your wax or sealant in those areas, as polishing will remove your LSP.
