I wouldn't use a rag to clean the top. If you're using the 303 cleaner, wet the top down, spray the cleaner on the top and brush the top clean. Or, just use your regular car wash soap and a mitt to wash the top.
Here's what I like to do after I wash and dry the car. I let it sit overnight to completely dry then put the 303 protectant on and let that dry real well before I drop the top.

Just the protectant. You don't need the cleaner if you wash your top as a regular part of your car wash.

I used the 303 cleaner and protectant and was not impressed in how it cleaned bird poo. (and I do my fair share of tests)
I'm sticking with the Porsche Cabriolet kit cleaner, conditioner. my top beads like the dickens with that stuff.. double the cost though

just my $.02

probably, but I just went into my local Porsche Dealer Service Dept, (got the rolling eyes pulling in there with an s2000) heh heh heh .. and simply bought the kit.. However you can get away with just buying the cleaner, and conditioner spray..

Thanks guys for your replies - I think I'll go with just the 303 Protectant since I wash the top with car soap as I do the rest of the car during every wash. I know someone said that you would scrub the top with a bristle brush after spraying on the 303 Cleaner but what about the Protectant? After you clean the car and dry the top, you would spray the Protectant directly onto the top and buff it dry with a cloth or would you use a scrub brush in the case of the Protectant too? Thanks.

For mild dirt, spray on the cleaner and let it sit for a minute or three. You can also agitate with a stiff brush. For tougher stains, such as bird poo, let the cleaner sit on the stain for 10-15 minutes. Again, agitate as necessary.

The 303 Aerospace Protectant doesn't need to be scrubbed on. You basically spray it onto a rag and rub it onto the top. Then, go fix yourself a sandwich, have a beer and wait. Up to 30 minutes should be fine. At that point take a clean rag and wipe the excess from the top. I like to wait a good 12 hours before I drop the top, so the 303 will fully dry.
