Not to rain on your parade, but...

Hot air vs. hot piece of metal, I would go with the hot air, but thats just me. Hot metal leaves little to no room for error.

Might I also suggest laying a folded paper towel over the gum and then using an iron on low so you can put a little pressure on it WHILE heating it.

On low heat, with the paper towel between it and the leather, it should insulate it enough not to harm the leather, and the gum will start to stick to the paper towel.
I did this method thanks to a friend who experienced chewing gum stuck to this leather seats, it came off perfectly, just need to condition it, feels kind of sticky.

Thanks for all the help W&W guys!

While you are at it with the peanut butter, pull out a little wheat bread and a little grape jelly, make sure it is grape jelly because that is the only kind I like...make a sandwich and do this... j/k to tukluc, no harm intended
If you are the expert, then who am I to complain

But I can guarantee that peanut butter is THE best way to get gum out of hair

with candy and gum in carpet and upholstery, I like to get a can of compressed air (duster). Turn the can upside down, and spray onto the gum. The liquid compressed gas will quickly freeze the gum, and easily chip off. As some of you are worried about getting water into the perforated leather, you can rest easy with this method, because the ice is not water-based. Follow up with a leather cleaner, for any remaining residue.
