Check the detailed specs for both. The Porter-Cable has an electric motor that will outlive us all, a wide variable speed adjustment, and is generally built like a tank. I got one four years ago at a Porter-Cable factory store for about $75, and I use it on all four of my cars. I decided to pay a little extra for some expected longevity and above-average use. Time will tell.

Do you really need a variable speed adjustment, won't that equate to uneven results? Most people I've heard from use just the low speed on their buffers.

I've never had a problem with my Craftsman tools, I still use my grandfather's Craftsman drill that looks old enough to have tubes in it.

One thing about the Porter Cable style buffer that makes me feel uncomfortable is the way you have to hold it. If you drop the back end of it you get a dent for sure. The Sears buffer can't be dropped since your never supporting it above the car.

I don't get good feelings about holding a tank abouve my cars finish.

from what I read, if both are random orbital, then what the real difference here is speed and 'quality'.

What would matter more I guess would be technique and what quality pad you are using to apply the wax/compound.

For non abrasive polish you would use a hi speed and for carnuba a medium speed. With regards to you query regarding the cost. . . . . Ya usually get what you pay for whether it be cars, health insurance, and random orbital buffers.
