Default Scotch brite polished stainless muffers?

I was thinking of taking a scotch brite pad to my shinny polished stainless steel magnaflow mufflers to give them a brushed look. Would there be any draw backs in doing this like rusting or any discoloration???

o.k.- i knew there was a reason...
from a quick search :

"Steel Wool Pads .... No Way!!

Never use steel wool to clean a stainless steel sink. Small steel fibers will be left behind which will rust. Always use a nylon or some other synthetic cleaning pad to scour the sink. These pads used in conjunction with approved abrasive cleaners will do anything that you might have attempted with steel wool. "

thanks sooo... scotch brite pads should be ok for removing the polished finish, but I was just wondering if the mufflers will start to rust or form water spots that will be hard to keep clean after the first rain? I just don't really care for the high polished look, and wanted something more subtle like a matte finish.

you could try #0000 steel wool, or the scotch-brite pad, with some liquid metal polish, like 1Z chrome and metal polish. It will leave behind a protective coating. Just buff off with an old MF towel when finished. (make sure to not use that towel for anything else).

Make sure you use the polish, whenever the exhaust gets dirty. can be applied with and removed with a MF toewl, so rust doesn't form.

The stainless isn't a coating. The entire metal is. A scotch brite and dish soap with a small amount of water as a lubricant will work for a satin finish.

ok thanks! i'll be trying one of these methods within the next week. I also bought a bottle of Complete Magic to top it off. Its a non-abrasive streak-free fingerprint resistant surface cleaner for stainless metals. So after I scotch brite down to a satin finish, i'll protect it with this between washes to help protect the metal.
