Why do you feel the need to mask anything off? I've never used tape of any kind when using a buffer to put on or take off wax or polish.

 

Saves having to get the wax/polish out of panel gaps and off trim.

 

I cover the headlights with blue painters tape when i do a full PC detail

 

When I first started with the PC I would tape off cars. Now I don't bother because I never get that much polish in the cracks. If I do get polish in there I just clean it out with some QD and tooth brush. The only thing that really concerns me is getting sling on the convertible top. Luckily, I haven't had a problem with that yet.

 

If you are really going to be concerned with it, I would go with 3M blue painters tape. That is really easy to apply, comes in a variety of widths, and comes off with no effort.
