Exclamation Coil pack fitment/application/info thread

... perhaps I bought the wrong ones.

I've got an '02 S2000 and want to replace the original coil packs to see if that resolves my hesitation issue. Anyway, on Rock Auto, the 02-03 packs are $151 each, but '04 (Part #U5099) are $33... so I bought a pack of the less expensive ones. Who knows why the others are 151... that's nuts.

Anyway, I heard that the '04 coils would fit, but I'm struggling with them. I put an old plug into one of them and I can see that the top of the plug doesn't reach the 'bottom' of the neck of the coil. The same plug will sit all the way down in an old coil and goes 'thunk' as it hits the contact within that neck. It's difficult to describe.

Maybe past iterations of these particular coils *did* also fit pre-'04 cars and for whatever reason they don't now.

I doubt I can return them, but maybe I can manipulate them in some way such that they will seat completely on the plug. Maybe remove the spring and replace with one from the old coil?

It's definitely not the rubber seal (either top or bottom) that is the culprit, as even with the bottom one removed, the plug doesn't sit all the way into the coil.

This is what I got from NGK site. I guess you'll need to send them back.

Yes, I'll try and return them. Arg.

BUT.. more urgent problem now is that one of the rubber end pieces came off a coil and is stuck on the plug down in the well. I can't figure out how to get this damn thing out.

I'm at the point now where I think I need to put some gorilla glue on the end of the coil and insert it... then let it sit for a few hours to cure and hope that it comes out in one piece.

Does the part number on the coils you received match the part number which you ordered?

I'm a little lost on what you've tried.

You tried installing the coils on the actual car? Do they bolt in and do they work? Or did you just stop after the new coils didn't make the same noise as the old ones when you tried installing them?

The factory coils are made by Denso.
So NGK coils may just fit differently.

** UPDATE ** : got the little bugger out. Thanks all. Now back to searching for an affordable set of coils for this fricking thing.

Thanks, but those fingers wouldn't have enough clasping strength to pull it off the plug.

I tried putting the coils on the car and noticed that the bracket thing (with the screw hole) wouldn't fit flush with the cover. Try as I might, none of them would sit down far enough. On inspection with them removed and using an old plug, I see that they won't fit all the way down over the exposed end of the plug. They are simply the wrong part and most definitely won't work on this car. Live and learn.. that's what I get for trying to save some money.

But, bigger problem is that I now have to get this rubber cap off the plug. I'll have to go buy an extra long set of needle nose pliers.

This is what NGK says:

https://www.ngk.com/ngk-48664-u5245-ignition-coil

Denso packs are no longer available. Prolly why NGK is so expensive.

The correct Denso part number for the '04-05 coil packs is: 673-2301. Yes, these will work on '00-03 as I run them on my '00. The AP1 specific coil pack part number is 673-2300 however, it costs a lot more (as it does at Honda and Rock auto) and is not available on Amazon any longer. I don't see the 673-2301 either. Now all they have is 673-2302...

NGK is a great brand too so their coils should work just fine but I haven't personally tried them. You should not have fitment issues with coil packs. If you do then they're probably not meant for the car.

The NGK coils I bought from Rock Auto are in fact meant for only '04 + '05, which their site (and Rock Auto) is clear about ($50 each):
https://www.ngk.com/ngk-48922-u5099-ignition-coil

These are the NGK coils that would fit my car, as winhund116 mentioned ($150 each!):
https://www.ngk.com/ngk-48664-u5245-ignition-coil

For various reasons, I was reasonably confident that the *NGK* coils meant for '04/'05 would work on my AP1, as the '04/'05 *Denso* coils do (as you mention). But apparently that's not the case for the NGKs. Or at least, I am not able to make them work.

When I was reading about alternative coils for the AP1, my head was swimming -- the internet (and s2ki) discusses various options, including maybe K20 coils, but specific to a particular model year of RSX and Civic I think? I couldn't find any info that said definitively "these are the ones that will work on an AP1".

The part number you sent me in a message was the same info as what I ordered from RockAuto and mine have worked fine ... seems like maybe they sent a different part number?
