It's not about better, it's about making all the parts of the page fit and not having it look like ass.
This topic which has both sizes gives a clear idea of how much bigger the old size is and also how much more dominant the old size avatars are in relation to the content of the page.
It's still fluid. We'll see how it works out.

If not, are the stars for people with 9+ years going to shrink or be wrapped to meet the new layout?
