Using Status Updates to promote for sale threads
I've seen countless people posting status updates to promote their for sale threads. Usually it gets deleted/locked but people are still doing it. Maybe there should be a formal thread/announcement lettting people know this is not allowed?
I agree. People were never notified so their threads keep getting deleted and then they post up asking why. If it is being closed all mods should post a reply stating why it is locked and an announcement should be made as well. Doesn't help people learn that by just deleting without an explanation imo.
What do you mean locked? The status update or the FS topic?
There is no formal policy specific to status updates. No SPAM applies everywhere. You aren't allowed to try and sell something to anyone or promote something like a website or a contest or a company or whatever without being asked about it by someone first. People post recommendations for products or businesses which we are flexible about as long as it seems to us it is honest and genuine. If it looks like an ad we take it down.
Initiation is the key. If the seller initiates the communication then it is SPAM. Status updates are clearly seller initiated and therefore SPAM.

The status update.
Yeah that's what I thought. Just was thinking you might want to add something more specific in regards to status updates, as some members obviously feel that they are entitled to advertise their for sale threads (on S2ki) in their status since they are a paying member. Obviously I disagree, since there is already a whole forum dedicated to for sale threads and thus I feel status updates need not be cluttered with that. But yeah, just thought you might want to make a more specific rule/announcement to keep people from doing it... otherwise my guess is that they will continue doing it.

Formal Announcement?

That'll work. Do you know how many support emails we get from people saying they get a "you don't have permission to start a new topic" error in the Members Classifieds forum and they can't understand why? Most of them.

At least a formal rule should be made... The people you're getting support emails from are random people who just joined the site... they're obviously not going to know anything. But most members here know the rules for the most part, but at this point it's not even a formal rule... so how can you even expect most members to know?
Again I say, what does it hurt? Does it really take that much time to do? You could have posted the rule in the time it took you to post a reply... I'd be more understanding if you reprehension to do such if it took lots of time out of your busy schedule, but it really doesn't. All it takes is one post. At least then people will have something to reference when telling people of the rule.

Technically I guess that would cover it, but that's pretty broad and I guarantee you most people wouldn't think that applies to statuses promoting their S2ki for sale threads...
I really just don't understand why you're so against taking 10 seconds to make a more specific rule... It really isn't that hard or time consuming. As I said before, you could have posted the new rule in the time it took to write your response... But whatever, obviously you already have your mind made up on the issue, for whatever reason...

because people are still doing this and it's annoying.
