Using Status Updates to promote for sale threads
People post SPAM because they
a) don't bother to read and know the rules
- or -
b) know the rules but are douche bags who do it anyway.
No amount of written rules, no matter how many way you reword them, are going to help in either case.
That's like saying that more "No Littering" signs would stop people from throwing their trash on road or someone saying they didn't realize it wasn't cool to dump their McDonalds trash out of their car window and drive away because there was no sign telling them they couldn't.
The rules are unchanged. This thread serves to notify members they cannot post spam in their status updates should that clarification be necessary. They are as likely to read it as any other I may post on the subject.

No, this is not like that situation at all. People innately know littering is wrong, people innately do not know posting about stuff for sale in their statuses isn't allowed. In their eyes they paid for the subscription to the site, which grants them permission to sell items. In their eyes they are just extending that permission to status updates. And this is not SPAM. SPAM is mass posted, copy and pasted advertising for a commercial product. These are classified ads that (as I pointed out previously) people have paid to have the permission to post (although it should be restricted to the Marketplace forum).
And as I said before, even if they read the rules, they likely wouldn't take away from them that posting about stuff for sale in their statuses wasn't allowed. Mainly because some of those rules are extremely broad and slightly confusing. It's like trying to read state statutes or something...
Finally, you still continue to avoid my biggest question... why are you acting like this is so difficult and time consuming? I might be able to understand how you would think that the rules already cover them, but seriously, what does it hurt to add one more that is more specific and clear? Especially if it only takes a minute max...
I just don't understand this...

No kidding.
The gallery is another one (not talking about the curent situation) People don't get why they get permission messages when trying to upload images
We can do an annoucement, however, people do not read them. That is pretty evident this last 6 weeks.
FYI.. a status post was posted from a site mod, confirmed by an admin not to use the status updates as your selling avenue. That dropped off the radar quickly.

Why not at least have the mods, when locking the status update, post a message as to why? As of now they usually either just delete it or lock it with no explanation. Not very productive if you ask me.
Something short and simple like "Please read this: -link to thread HondaGal just made-" and a lock would get the job done.
I wonder if it be more effective to post a more prominent notice (in addition to the notice thread HondaGal just posted) like some text embedded in the HTML code that remains constant.
For example, you know how the Member S2000 Classifieds and For Sale section has this note below it? "Items for sale by Members. PAID MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED to post classified ads with a paid membership." Of course, if it was more prominent (maybe larger font and brighter font color) and then repeated within the Member S2000 Classifieds and For Sale section it'd be more effective. The completely ignorant folks will still miss it, but perhaps it would cut down on the majority of those questions from guests.
Maybe a note below the "What's on your mind?" box that says something like "PAID MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED to post status updates." and "Do not use this area to post items for sale."
The key is to make it noticeable and obvious rather than making people have to dig around to find it.
Just my 2¢ FWIW.

What I don't get is that you got what you wanted on my very first reply yet you continue to ask for me to post that you can't use the status update to post for sale when I already did, right at the top of this topic in post #3 and I reapeated it many times over in successive replies.
The rules are simple and absolute. They apply to everything, everywhere. What part of "You may not post any ad to sell any product or service, new or used" confuses you?
