Default Why does S2KI even have a search engine?

It doesn't work for crap. I had to manually search through my posts for a thread I started 2 months ago because the search engine couldn't match "world trade center" with my post titled "what is your choice for the new world trade center", much less any of the other numerous threads from sept 11 discussing the attacks on the world trade center.

What a POS!

You need to read your results
Search word results: world : 0 / 0, trade : 7617 / 7617, center : 8416 / 8416

See how the word "world" returned nothing. remove it an try again... And what do you know but your thread is not only on the first page but the FIRST result.

The search engine uses something called stop words which is a dictionary of words that occur so frequently they become too common and stop getting indexed. I periodically remove them if find any that seem odd, as I will do w/ world.

If you read the word result info it returns you will find it works very well.

Thanks Rylan. That is useful info. I have had a bit of trouble with the search engine as well and had no idea to look at the word results. Good thing. Thanks!

thats cool...too bad that the search engine cannot just dismiss those stop words and then continue the search without them, provided that they are not the only word in the search.

FYI I have switched to a smaller list of "stop words" so that words like world aren't filtered. It will take about a week for the articles to get re-indexed w/ the new data.

lehighwiz: some how I suspect it can, but I need to look into how.

Rylan - I noticed the word count, and didn't understand why 0 results with the word "world" would be returned. I wasn't aware that "world" was a stop word, as it didn't seem that common. I realize words such as "the", "of", "and" and so forth would be stop words and thus wouldn't search them.

However, this is not the first time I've had an exorbant amount of difficulty searching for a thread I know exists.

Anyway, thanks for the fix. Hopefully it'll cure my ills with regards to the search engine.

Hopefully.
