Default Cleaning an oil furnace

The recent plumbing thread had me thinking about our oil fired furnace. We have a service contract and have it cleaned once a year. Is there a best time to do this? Before the heating season, During or After?

I usually do it right before or after...same difference. Which reminds me I need to call them!

if you think about it the beginning and the end are actually pretty much the same thing.
it depends on the type of system you have though.
if your hot water comes off of the same unit, you probably want it to be done in the fall.
In my case the system basically shuts off in the spring and isn't running until the fall.

The cleaning guy did mention to me it is easier if the system has been running and is warm.
It tends to clean easier.

I have a contract for my gas furnace and air conditioner. They will be making an appointment with me sometime next month for the A/C and they come back the end of August/early September for the furnace.

This Do it at the end of the season, that way if parts are needed they can be found ordered and installed before the next season starts if they are hard to get parts.

Beginning of the season is best. Have it cleaned out and inspected by late Sept. that way if you have any problems they can be found and repaired before winter sets in.
