Thumbs up Burning Oil?

So I hear from everyone including so called honda experts that the more powerful of honda v-tec cars tend to burn oil especially while in v-tec. Does this sound right? And if so how much is TOO MUCH? I have had to put in an extra quart for the second time within 5 weeks because the oil pressure was low. The light never came on but you can feel it in the v-tec when it pauses power. What do you guys think?

It is considered normal to burn up to 1 quart of oil per 1k miles. Oil consumption is usually highest when the car is new and tapers off when you have about 10k miles on the car. As you have heard, aggressive driving will cause the engine to use more oil. I would often go through 1/2 quart of oil in 2-300 miles on the track.

It's very important to check your oil at every (EVERY) fill up and keep the oil topped off. For my car, I usually add about 1/4 - 1/2 quart two to three times between 4-5k mile oil changes.

How hard are you driving the car?

FYI: My normal driving takes me into Vtec at least 10 times a day. Unfortunately, I don't get to drive that far very often any more due to the location of my work place. Under those conditions, though I would have to put at least a quart in between oil changes, which were about every month given that I would drive about 3K per month.

Highway or city cruising shouldn't run the oil down much at all if you're not revving it hard.

Its possible.. how are you drivving your car? How many miles?

If you aren't comfortable.. the best thing would be to have it checked.

Well I definitely drive aggressive but it sounds like you all get the same results so maybe I shouldn't worry, but just in case I will have it checked like worm said I'm just better off like that. I just have never had a car that has needed so much oil so frequently.......then again I have never had a car that can rev to 9grand and pull 240hp from a 2 liter..... So maybe it just comes with the territory. I'm going to start buying boxes of Mobil 1 and just keep them in the garage....lol

I am in VTEC every day I drive and would be considered a "spirited" driver. I have a MY04 with 18000 miles and have never used more than 1 notch of oil on the stick.

Does the oil consumption mean there is something wrong? I don't know, but I have owned numerous cars over the years and I have found that engines that use oil from the get-go usually continue to use oil throughout their life. Is it bad? Again, I don't know, but any vehicle I owned that did use oil did not have any major mechanical problems.

I guess the most important thing is to monitor for changes in oil consumption more than worry about consistent higher than average use between changes.

I'd get it checked out, maybe run a compression test and an oil analysis. Like everyone else, I burned a bit till around 10k miles. Then I went to mobile1 after I added the SC. I burn no oil. I change it out every 3k and I drive my car pretty hard.

good luck
