Default FL Electrical code question

My wife owns a house in FL. Built in '50s. She had insurance until the company dropped coverage in FL. in order to get new coverage, an inspection had to be done. Inspector came by and said that the electrical system needs to be upgraded from fuses to breakers.

is this possible? a forced upgrade? i have never heard of a forced code upgrade, everything is usually grandfathered in. and why didn;t the old company require this?

thanks
Dave

Well as far as the upgrade , YES... You can go from fuses to breakers. I had it done a few years back (upgraded rental) and it cost, at that time, around $700 to $1000...

Yes, they can choose not to write coverage without the upgrade. Insurers are having a field day with us down here - bastards!
