FIA Proposes Changes for 2008
It feels like F1's focus on curbing costs to save the viability of smaller teams like Minardi and Jordan will reduce the series effectivness of being a testbed for innovation that eventually finds its way to our road cars.
Does a team like Toyota really need these cost cutting measures?
I'd really like to see a series with a minimum of restrictions and global manufacturer participation. Something that would challenge innovation and open the door to better technology finding its way to the street.
Imagine the response if Hyundai could beat Ferrari at the top level of racing. Pretty cool bump in image. Its always worked for Honda. (at least when they were winning)

I agree with BeachBum, it would be interesting to see all the neat innovations people would come up with.
Instead of restricting things you can use, how about letting all technology available to all the teams? I know there is a big factor on money... but imagine the possibilities

Seriously. I completely lost interest in F1 after the turbo era. Heh. When Honda stopped winning. Any time I've watched it I've fallen asleep in the middle. It doesn't make for bad sound effects for sleeping. I often have dreams I'm racing a car.
F1 is supposed to be about the ultimate technology and innovation. Crazy wild people coming up with crazy wild revolutionary ideas about making cars faster. I want to see teams fielding a huge block Chevy against a 20000rpm turbo 5-banger that's shaped like a jet fighter. Or hovercars, or whatever! Innovation shouldn't have stopped with the Chapparal and 6 wheeled cars. These days it just sucks!
You know what I think would make a REALLY cool series? Force manufacturers to build their car as a street-legal $50,000 machine. They have to LITERALLY run their cars right off the showroom floor. Do you have any idea how much innovation would filter down to customers? It would be INSANE! Plus, think about the cost of entry. Almost anyone would be able to have a chance to drive a top F1 car. It would be a complete democratization of racers! Any kid can grow up to be a world racing star!
It'll never happen, but it's nice to dream.
