And? It's still illegal today and not too many know about it. They are just now considering making the clear ones legal.

I can understand if they were legal now and the information was irrelevant, but what does the age of the article have to do with anything?

Just trying to bring it to peoples attention if they were like me and didn't know.

The jails in Ontario must be jammed full since this illegality was revealed nearly 10 years ago and everyone continued to ignore it. Raids at Canada Tire?

Everything is illegal now.

Had tinted plate covers for 3 years with no issues, I've been pulled over but not for them.

Cops can justify pulling you over for pretty much anything. Run a clear cover IMO and you shouldn't have much of an issue, tinted covers will attract more attention. I wish they (cops) put this much effort into catching car thieves and theft recoveries, they don't seem to give a damn about that.

Its just an easy way to stop you. In Ottawa we had a famous officer who would wait outside any car show waiting for anyone.

You would think that a license plate that has been stone chipped down to the metal or had the blue peel right off would be more difficult to read than a protected clear plate. I always put one on my front plate, I didn't pay $200 for my personalized plates to become a piece of scrap metal in a couple years. My rear plates are not covered as there is no need, and the rear plate is more important anyways.

I've had clear front license plate covers for almost 30 years and never had an issue, both in Canada and in the US. I never cover the rear plate because I don't see the point. In the front you get stone chips, bugs, dirt, etc, but covering the rear makes no sense. Why would anyone want to cover the rear plate?

Sometimes I see SUVs with tinted rear plate covers, and in the winter, when there's a lot of salt on the ground, you can't read the plate at all. I'm not surprised people get pulled over by the cops.

In my DD, both my plates have the letters slowly peeling off. Soon I will have to buy new plates to avoid getting ticketed or stopped.

Now I m going to spend 30$ I believe to get a new plate. The plate is 6 years old. Both front and rear are peeling and is illegal for me to protect them. So in 6 years I guess I will be buying new plates.
