I read on the tire forum that we should go 245/45/16 in the rear if we are running anything other than the Stock S02s...

so when i get winter tires... should i bother with the contact patch (since i think we want a bit less contact with winter tires) and go for 225/50/16 instead?

Fred, there is a tire forum, post it there and it will be asked by Jim by next day

Most of the T.O members probabily wont drive the S during the winter.

Stock sizes are good for winter tires. You don't need the same contact as the rear SO2's for this use. I've been running stock sizes for 3 winters now (4th one coming up) - no problems. Just remember that snow tires will feel mushy if you push it on dry roads.

The size of the contact patch doesn't change very much when you go with a higher profile/smaller diameter tire... but the shape does.

If the width measurement stays the same,
higher profile (or aspect ratio) = LARGER diameter. The "shape" of the contact patch is dependent upon tire pressure, tire construction (rubber type) and tread design & depth.

I run stock winter sizes and trust me, when that freezing rain hits or light snow, NUTHIN' makes a considerable difference except calm car control.

My $.02
