Default What do you guys pay for home insurance?

Just a thought. My home insurance is up for renewal. I live in a 1400 Sq foot 2 bedroom 2 bath townhouse downtown Ottawa. My insurance in the past few years has been in the high $600/ year range but this year it has climbed over $700/year. I'm through ING but feel that is getting a bit ridiculously high. I know most of you guys are in the GTA but I would gladly appreciate your input on what you pay for insurance or feel I'm getting hoodwinked!

Thanks in advance.

My agent has told me that the area I live in is deemed a higher crime area but mine is double yours.

Yeah probably is a higher crime area. Also I get a discount for my home being new, but it is only like $30-$50 or something.

Home insurance also depends on the $ amount of what you own...

I pay just over $600 and my place is smaller (!) than yours. However the area was hit with a flood 2 out of 3 years, so that can't help. My place was hit the second time around, but thankfully my dad still owned the house at the time so it was his claim.

I think it also depends on various things you have in your house that would be considered risks (fireplaces, etc.). Maybe if you call around for quotes that might shed a little light on things.

True, and that applies to both your house and contents.

Also if your auto is with the same carrier, you'll get a discount for both auto and property policies as well.

Age of the property owner also plays a factor for some insurers.

WOW!

in that case, ours is a steal at $900!!!!!

when we bought our first place in miss. 10 years ago, we paid $200....1400 sq ft. townhouse. it was an end unit though, so our broker said it saves a few bucks.

no more than $130-ish? -- but I live in a condo w/ virtually nothing of value in terms of possessions.
