IMO the best thing to do is create a *SINGLE* thread for all spontaneous meets and have people subscribe to the thread with instant email updates

Agreed. The functionality already exists on this forum (e.g., you can subscribe to the Wednesday meets thread). It's one-click away and negates the need to check anything, or have another person to update an FB page. It would cater to the all the lurkers...although, I suppose, the point of lurking would be to NOT take 2 minutes and register an anonymous profile on this forum.
